Toronto's Scarborough Busway opens Sept 30, six months early

· N GLOBE

The 4-km busway along the former Line 3 corridor cuts the Kennedy-to-Scarborough Centre trip to about 15 minutes for more than 118,000 weekly riders.

Why it matters

Scarborough commuters have relied on on-street replacement buses since the Line 3 Scarborough RT closed permanently after a July 2023 derailment. The dedicated busway restores a fast, traffic-free link years before the subway extension is finished.

The Toronto Transit Commission opened the Scarborough Busway on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, more than six months ahead of its original early-2027 target. The four-kilometre corridor runs along the former Line 3 right-of-way between Kennedy and Ellesmere stations, with stops at Kennedy Station, Tara Avenue, Lawrence East and Ellesmere, before buses continue on Ellesmere Road priority lanes to Scarborough Centre.

The TTC says the trip from Kennedy to Scarborough Centre takes about 15 minutes on the busway — roughly seven minutes faster than the on-street replacement service, which took 17 to 22 minutes depending on traffic. Nine bus routes (38, 129, 131, 133, 154, 903, 904, 938 and 939) now use the corridor. Mayor Olivia Chow said more than 118,000 riders a week will save travel time on the new link.

The nearly $70-million project was a campaign promise from Chow's 2023 mayoral run and was fast-tracked in the 2024 city budget. Councillor Michael Thompson announced the opening date on August 20 alongside Chow and TTC CEO Mandeep S. Lali. Once service settles in, the painted red bus-priority lanes on Kennedy Road and Midland Avenue are slated for removal.
