Vandals cut through a security fence at Second Harvest's Etobicoke facility and stripped valuable diesel components from seven trucks, sidelining half the food rescue charity's delivery fleet over the holiday weekend.

Why it matters

Over the Thanksgiving long weekend, suspects cut through a security fence at Second Harvest's Etobicoke facility and used power tools to strip valuable diesel components from seven trucks, rendering half of the charity's delivery fleet inoperable. Second Harvest is Canada's largest food rescue organization, redistributing food that would otherwise go to landfill to people in need.

Full report

Security video obtained by CityNews shows at least two suspects. Duncan Salisbury, the charity's vice-president of supply chain and logistics, estimated repairs at about $10,000 per vehicle — and with rental vehicles and third-party carriers needed to cover routes, the total cost could reach $100,000. "We're a charity, we're not for profit. One hundred thousand dollars to us is a lot," he said, calling the timing over Thanksgiving weekend "outrageous."

The charity managed Sunday deliveries with its reduced fleet and is now scrambling to rejig Tuesday's routes, hunting for every rental unit available and leaning on third-party help. Anyone wishing to help can donate at secondharvest.ca. Toronto police are investigating. CTV News Toronto, Global News and the Toronto Sun also reported the incident.
