UK launches world's first AI Biosecurity Lab: £100m government funding, up to £200m more from OpenAI and Anthropic

The lab will run as an independent non-profit, pairing frontier AI with life-sciences talent to sharpen early detection of biological threats and speed up vaccines and treatments.
Why it matters
This is the world's first dedicated AI biosecurity organisation, elevating "AI plus biosecurity" to national-strategy level in the UK — with OpenAI and Anthropic committing directly, bringing the total package to up to £300 million.
Full report
The UK Cabinet Office announced on 24 October the creation of the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL), backed by £100 million of government funding plus up to £200 million in company commitments from OpenAI and Anthropic.
OpenAI will provide £100 million in compute and model credits and trusted access to its most capable relevant models through the Rosalind Biodefense programme; Anthropic will provide up to £100 million in model credits, trusted model access and dedicated technical support.
AIBL will operate as an independent, non-profit organisation under the UK's National AI Biosecurity Initiative, bringing together frontier AI and biological-science talent. Its initial delivery will focus on enhancing early detection of emerging biological threats and accelerating the discovery, development and testing of vaccines, treatments and other medical countermeasures.
The government says the move responds to a double reality: AI can accelerate scientific discovery and improve understanding of disease, but increasingly capable AI systems also change the biological-risk landscape and could lower barriers to harmful activity. AIBL will also partner with Google DeepMind and UK AI life-sciences company Basecamp Research, and work with the medicines regulator MHRA to prepare for the regulation of AI-designed medicines.
