Russian overnight strikes hit Ukraine's energy grid, leaving 600,000 without power

· N GLOBE

Russia launched 39 missiles and 128 drones at Kyiv and Kharkiv overnight Oct 13-14, damaging at least 26 power facilities and four oil and gas sites; over 600,000 people lost power, with at least 3 dead and 21 injured in Kyiv.

Why it matters

One of the largest Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy system ahead of winter, it landed days after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed over the weekend that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an "energy ceasefire." Zelenskyy says Moscow has already violated that arrangement and warned outages could spread further on Wednesday.

Full report

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on October 14 that Russia launched a large-scale overnight assault on energy facilities in Kyiv, the Kyiv region and the northeastern city of Kharkiv, cutting power to at least 600,000 people. Ukraine's air force said Russia fired 39 ballistic and cruise missiles and 128 drones; Ukrainian air defenses intercepted four missiles and 115 drones.

The strikes damaged at least 26 power facilities and four oil and gas installations. A ballistic missile struck Kyiv's CHP-4 power plant on Tuesday evening, according to Zelenskyy; Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported at least three people killed and 21 injured in Kyiv. Energy company DTEK reported emergency outages in several districts. Russia's Defense Ministry said it struck seven Ukrainian energy facilities and a data center, and claimed its forces shot down 902 Ukrainian drones overnight.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine's air defenses detected the missiles only as they neared Kyiv and that partners provided no early warning. He added that Trump announced an energy ceasefire on social media over the weekend, but he denied any agreement and the Kremlin did not confirm one; a White House official told Axios the proposal covered only oil refineries. The backdrop: on October 9 the U.S. licensed imports of Russian diesel while pressing Kyiv to stop striking Russian refineries.
