US, Canada and eight nations jointly accuse Iran of terrorist activity in the Western Hemisphere
The US, Canada and eight Latin American and Caribbean nations issued a joint declaration pledging closer cooperation against suspected Iran-linked terrorist plotting, illicit financing and influence operations in the Western Hemisphere.
Why it matters
Ten Western Hemisphere governments — led by the United States and Canada — have publicly accused Iran and its proxies of terrorist plotting, illicit fundraising and political interference across the Americas. It is a rare multilateral show of force against Tehran outside the Middle East.
Full report
The joint declaration followed a Countering Transnational Terrorism Forum co-hosted by the United States and Paraguay, focused on cooperation among law-enforcement and security agencies against transnational terrorism, illicit financing and other activities attributed to Iran.
Signatories are the United States, Canada, Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru and Trinidad and Tobago. They said they were united in protecting citizens and national security from activities associated with Iran and its proxies, including alleged terrorist plots, illicit fundraising, political interference and foreign influence operations.
The governments pledged to deepen cooperation on information sharing, strengthen law-enforcement coordination and disrupt networks suspected of supporting Iran-linked activity. The move comes amid broader US-Iran tensions over Tehran's nuclear programme and regional activities.
