Democrats win back both chambers of Congress in midterms, setting up divided government for Trump's final two years

The Associated Press, NBC News and CNN confirmed early on November 4 that Democrats won control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives in the November 3 midterm elections, ending unified Republican control of Congress. In the Senate, Democrats flipped seven Republican-held seats - Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina; in the House, Democrats crossed the 218-seat majority threshold. Final seat counts are still being tallied and some races remain uncalled; the new Congress takes office on January 3, 2027, with House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries in line to become speaker. The 2026 midterm results were settled early on November 4: Democrats won both the Senate and the House of Representatives, setting up divided government for the final two years of Donald Trump's second term. CNN projected the Senate flip at 11:35 p.m. Eastern on November 3, followed by the Associated Press; the AP called the House for Democrats at about 1:28 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday. Republicans entered election night with a 53-47 Senate majority and 220 House seats. (Cover photo is a file photo of the US Capitol.)
Senate: a net gain of seven, including longtime Republican strongholds
According to AP and NBC tallies, Democrats flipped seven Republican-held Senate seats: James Talarico beat Ken Paxton in Texas, Adam Hamilton unseated incumbent Roger Marshall in Kansas, former senator Sherrod Brown won a comeback in Ohio, Troy Jackson defeated longtime senator Susan Collins in Maine, plus Iowa, North Carolina (Roy Cooper) and South Carolina. Democrats needed a net gain of only four to take the chamber and exceeded it.
House: past 218, with Jeffries in line for speaker
In the House, Democrats passed the 218-seat threshold for a majority; NBC reported 218 seats confirmed, while other projections put the party above 239. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is expected to become speaker when the new Congress convenes, though he must still be elected by the full House. Final seat totals remain unsettled, with some races still uncalled.
Governor wins too; new Congress takes office in January
Democrats also won Republican-held governorships in Texas, where Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Greg Abbott, as well as in Georgia and Ohio. Under the constitutional calendar, the new Congress convenes on January 3, 2027, when the Democratic majorities take effect; the current Congress finishes the remaining session first. For Trump, losing both chambers means his legislative agenda for the rest of his term will face direct Democratic checks.
