U.S. Justice Department Indicts Ten Foreign Nationals for Illegal Voting in Minnesota

U.S. Department of Justice announced indictments of ten foreign nationals in Minnesota accused of illegally registering and voting; the November 2022 and 2024 general elections and the August 2026 primary are covered.
Why it matters
The case is the latest in a string of noncitizen-voting prosecutions the Trump administration has made a signature of its election-security push. Attorney General Todd Blanche said the Justice Department has now charged 90 people with voter-related offences since President Trump returned to office — 50 of them in the last five weeks alone.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Wednesday that a federal grand jury in Minnesota indicted ten foreign nationals on September 24, 2026, for voter fraud. All ten have made initial appearances in federal court.
The indictments allege nine counts of illegal voting by an alien and nine counts of falsely claiming U.S. citizenship in order to register to vote. The conduct covers the November 2022 and 2024 general elections and Minnesota's August 2026 primary. The defendants — nationals of countries including Brazil, Ghana and Liberia — are accused of claiming citizenship when registering and then casting ballots in federal and state elections.
“Today's charges allege that ten foreign nationals committed voter fraud in Minnesota, one voting illegally as recently as this August's primary,” said Attorney General Todd Blanche, who announced the cases alongside Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and U.S. Attorney Daniel N. Rosen.
Mullin warned that noncitizens who vote face criminal charges and deportation. Under federal law, a false claim of citizenship to vote is a felony carrying up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine; voting as a noncitizen is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine.
In the same announcement, the Justice Department said it also filed a judicial misconduct complaint against nearly the entire active federal bench in Minnesota, accusing the judges of political bias in immigration-related rulings.
