Eddie, a 3-year-old Labrador guide dog, has been named the overall winner of the 16th annual American Hero Dog Awards; his handler, who is gradually losing his sight to retinitis pigmentosa, shares their life together with thousands online.

The American Humane Society announced on November 5 that Eddie, a 3-year-old Labrador guide dog, has been named the overall winner of the 16th annual Hero Dog Awards. Helping his handler face the world as his sight fades

Eddie's handler is Luis Rodriguez, who is gradually losing his sight to retinitis pigmentosa. The pair were matched through Dogs Inc., and Eddie accompanies him every day as he travels, works and lives. Rodriguez runs the social media account "Miami Guy and His Guide Dog," sharing their daily life and reaching thousands of people.

A 16-year-old award; ceremony in December

The Hero Dog Awards, now in their 16th year and sponsored by Waymo, honor working dogs in fields including service, search and rescue, and therapy. The awards ceremony will be held in Washington on December 3, where Eddie will be honored alongside the winners in the other categories.
