MLB Wild Card round opens Tuesday with Yankees–Red Sox showdown
Four Wild Card series open Tuesday: Phillies at Braves, White Sox at Astros, Red Sox at Yankees, Cubs at Padres. Rays and Astros took AL East and AL West.

The 162-game regular season is over and the 2026 MLB postseason opens Tuesday, September 29 with four best-of-three Wild Card series. Winners advance to the Division Series starting October 3.

Tuesday's Game 1 slate (all times ET): Phillies at Braves, 2 p.m.; White Sox at Astros, 5 p.m.; Red Sox at Yankees, 8 p.m.; Cubs at Padres, 10 p.m. Game 2 is Wednesday and a decisive Game 3, if needed, is Thursday. Higher seeds host the entire series.
The Yankees host the Red Sox in the Bronx in a rematch of AL East rivals — both missed the division crown behind the Tampa Bay Rays, who clinched the AL East with a 6-1 win at Yankee Stadium and took the No. 1 AL seed and a first-round bye. The Houston Astros clinched the AL West title with an 81–81 finish, edging the Texas Rangers on a tiebreaker, and will host the Chicago White Sox.
The Toronto Blue Jays closed the regular season with a 5–1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday at Rogers Centre, with Max Scherzer delivering seven strong innings (1 ER, 7 K), but Toronto does not feature among the AL playoff clubs.
Division Series begin Saturday, October 3: the Red Sox–Yankees winner faces the Rays, the White Sox–Astros winner faces the Guardians.
