NASA 'Artemis Acceleration' briefing: first look at Starship moon lander cabin, updated timeline to 2028 crewed landing

NASA held its Artemis Acceleration briefing at Kennedy Space Center on Oct 23, revealing the first images of SpaceX's Starship moon lander crew cabin and an updated milestones chart running to a 2028 crewed Moon landing.

Why it matters

NASA held its 'Artemis Acceleration' briefing at 2:00 PM EDT on October 23 at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, led by Administrator Jared Isaacman, Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya and Artemis program manager Jeremy Parsons, with an update on the plan to return astronauts to the Moon.

The agency gave the public its first look at the crew cabin SpaceX is building for its Starship moon lander. 'Cabin 1' is under construction inside SpaceX's Starfactory at Starbase, Texas; the images show padded white walls, a wood-toned ceiling panel, a padded bed with tie-down straps, and window openings cut into the steel hull.

NASA also released an updated SpaceX milestones chart: Cabin 1 fully built by the end of this quarter, operations testing in Q1 2027, an airlock demonstration in Q2; a ship-to-ship propellant transfer demo in Q1 2027, a landing leg demo in spring, uncrewed demo tanker flights in Q3, and an uncrewed lunar landing demonstration late in 2027.

Artemis III remains targeted for mid-2027, sending four astronauts into low Earth orbit to test docking between the Orion capsule and both landers (SpaceX's Starship and Blue Origin's Blue Moon), with no lunar landing. NASA's stated goal is still a crewed landing near the Moon's south pole on Artemis IV in early 2028, with the lander provider yet to be decided.

Note that these are planning targets, not completed milestones: NASA's inspector general and the Congressional Research Service have both flagged schedule and technical risks for the two commercial landers, so the 2028 target remains uncertain.
