A powerful, slow-moving nor'easter slammed the U.S. East Coast on Saturday, prompting the governors of New York and New Jersey to declare states of emergency. A hurricane-force gust of 74 mph was recorded in Surf City, New Jersey, and New York City is bracing for what could be its worst flooding since Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

According to Reuters, the storm is expected to bring flooding, powerful wind gusts, heavy rain and dangerous rip currents to coastal areas from Maine to Washington, D.C., over the weekend. Widespread gusts topping 60 mph continued to pound the Jersey Shore, where Surf City's 74-mph gust equaled hurricane strength. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted a video on X warning residents across all five boroughs to secure outdoor property, avoid unnecessary weekend travel and use the city's emergency notification system for real-time updates.
Travel is heavily disrupted: the FAA warned Friday that flights at all three major New York City-area airports could be hit by strong winds; American Airlines, JetBlue and United waived change fees for eligible Northeast flights through Sunday; and Amtrak warned of possible Northeast service disruptions. Major events were canceled or moved: Saturday's Global Citizen Festival in Manhattan's Central Park, Ed Sheeran's Friday and Saturday concerts near Boston (along with Alicia Keys and Lenny Kravitz shows), were called off; MLB moved Sunday's Cubs-Red Sox game at Fenway Park to a Friday doubleheader and the Yankees shifted their Saturday home game against the Orioles to Friday afternoon.
