Perplexity Computer now runs fully locally on Mac: model and agent stay on-device

· N GLOBE

Perplexity announced on October 20 that its AI agent Computer can now run entirely locally on Mac: the model, task planning, reasoning and file processing all happen on-device, with code executed in isolated sandboxes and 36GB+ of unified memory recommended.

Why it matters

AI agents are moving from the cloud into personal computers. Perplexity announced on October 20 that its agent, Computer, can now run "fully locally" on Mac — the AI model, task planning, reasoning and file processing all happen on-device, so personal data never has to leave the machine. It follows September's Hybrid Compute launch and pushes Perplexity further into on-device AI.

Full report

Local mode offers two model options: Qwen 3.6, and PPLX Pro, Perplexity's own post-trained version of Qwen 3.6. Subscribers download a local model in the Mac app, then choose "fully local" when starting a task. In local mode the agent can work directly with native Mac apps, including Notes, Messages, Mail, Keynote and Numbers — for example, scanning emails for deadlines and building a to-do list in Notes — without consuming cloud credits.

Privacy is the headline selling point. All code and tool execution runs in isolated sandbox environments with controlled permissions; users can authorize cloud access when a task needs current information, a browser or cloud-connected apps, and can call on more than 15 frontier models for tougher problems. Perplexity recommends 36GB or more of unified memory for the best experience — which rules out entry-level machines like the MacBook Air (M5, max 32GB) and aims the feature at M5 Pro/Max-class configurations and above.

Local mode is available now to Perplexity Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers. Users on lower-spec machines can still use Hybrid Compute, which pairs cloud frontier models for research and reasoning with a local model handling private files, on Macs with as little as 24GB of memory.
