Rays Blank Yankees 1-0 in ALDS Opener as Rasmussen Carries No-Hitter into Eighth

The Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 1-0 in Game 1 of the AL Division Series, with Drew Rasmussen taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning and striking out 10, a Rays postseason record.
Why it matters
Game 1 of the best-of-five American League Division Series was a pitchers' duel on October 3 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Rays won 1-0 on Jonathan Aranda's third-inning solo homer to take a 1-0 series lead. Starter Drew Rasmussen carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning with two outs, striking out 10 — a Rays postseason record — and the Yankees went hitless through six innings for the first time in their 447-game postseason history.
Full report
Aranda's homer off Yankees ace Gerrit Cole in the third was the first postseason homer of his career and the game's only run. Rasmussen went eight innings, allowing one hit, striking out 10 and walking two on 101 pitches. The Yankees' only hit was Austin Wells' two-out double in the eighth, but he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple to end the inning. Closer Bryan Baker retired the side in order in the ninth with two strikeouts for the save.
Cole took the loss, giving up one run on five hits with five strikeouts over five innings. The Yankees, missing Aaron Judge (calf injury, out since Sept. 16), managed just one hit. Game 2 is Monday in St. Petersburg. In the NLDS opener the same day, the Brewers beat the Padres 3-2 on William Contreras' go-ahead homer in the seventh.
