14 Bipartisan Senators Urge Trump to Rescind Putin's Invitation to Miami G20 Summit
Led by Senator Jeanne Shaheen, seven Republicans and seven Democrats wrote to President Trump urging him to rescind Vladimir Putin's invitation to the Dec. 14–15 G20 Leaders' Summit in Miami and bar sanctioned Russian officials from U.S.-hosted G20 events.

On September 25, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, led a group of 14 senators — seven Republicans and seven Democrats — in a letter to President Trump questioning the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 Leaders' Summit in Miami, Florida, on December 14–15.
The Republican signatories are Mitch McConnell (R-KY), John Cornyn (R-TX), Roger Wicker (R-MS), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Thom Tillis (R-NC), John Curtis (R-UT) and Alan Armstrong (R-OK). The Democrats are Shaheen, Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Chris Coons (D-DE), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Ruben Gallego (D-AZ).
"President Putin bears sole responsibility for launching Russia's full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine. Allowing him to participate in a G20 Summit in the United States raises serious concerns about legitimizing and normalizing a government that continues to attack Ukrainian civilian targets every day," the senators wrote.
They also voiced disappointment over recent Russian delegations at U.S.-hosted G20 meetings: sanctioned Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov led a delegation to the Finance Ministerial in Asheville, North Carolina, and Russian delegations attended the Innovation Ministerial in Chapel Hill and the Energy Abundance Ministerial in Houston.
The letter urges Trump to rescind Putin's invitation and ensure that other sanctioned Russian officials are not permitted at upcoming G20 engagements — including the Trade Ministerial, Foreign Ministers' Meeting and Leaders' Summit — until Russia agrees to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
Notably, the letter also commends Trump for signing the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, saying it gives the president additional tools to hold the Putin regime accountable — but asks: "if President Putin and his government are not isolated on the international stage, what incentive does Russia have to agree to a ceasefire?"
