Gunman drove through the fence and into the lunch area
According to Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Frank Losat, the gunman drove over several medians, crossed a grassy area and drove through a secured fence before crashing into an outdoor seating area where employees were having lunch. He then got out of the vehicle carrying a rifle, approached a woman and fatally shot her. Deputies responded within minutes of multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire; the first Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office unit arrived at 12:12 p.m., one minute after the initial calls. About 3,200 Citibank employees were on the property at the time.
Security guard confronted the gunman in the cafeteria
The gunman then entered the building's cafeteria, where an armed Citibank security guard confronted him. Both exchanged gunfire and the suspect was shot; he was later pronounced dead at Tampa General Hospital. "The security guard that's employed by Citibank stopped the threat," Losat said, adding that there was a potential for further violence. Four other people were treated at a local hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening; investigators had not determined whether those individuals were injured by gunfire, the vehicle, or otherwise.
367 deputies responded; motive undetermined
A total of 367 sheriff's office deputies responded, including members of the agency's command staff, detectives and street crime units, with SWAT teams and federal law enforcement partners also on scene. The campus includes six or seven three-story buildings, and deputies spent about two and a half hours clearing them, including locked rooms, to ensure they were secure. Sheriff Chad Chronister initially described the incident as targeted, but Losat later said investigators had not established whether the suspect and the victim knew each other, and the motive was undetermined. Tampa Bay 28 obtained video shared by the spouse of an employee inside the building showing the suspected gunman walking through the campus carrying a rifle; the gunman's face was blurred in case revealing his identity could identify the victim. The sheriff's office is asking anyone with video or information to come forward, at [email protected]. Crime scene processing could continue into Thursday.
