· N GLOBE

The U.S. is sending a third carrier strike group and up to 10,000 troops to the Middle East; Trump said he could resume bombing Iran after the midterms; Brent topped $102.

Why it matters

A third U.S. carrier strike group in the Middle East is a major military build-up, and the president is openly tying it to potential renewed strikes on Iran. Energy markets have already reacted: December Brent futures rose 4.4% to $102.31 a barrel and WTI gained 2.7% to close at $92.87 on Thursday.

Full report

The Wall Street Journal reported on October 1, citing U.S. officials, that the Pentagon is sending a third aircraft carrier strike group and Marine Corps vessels to the Middle East, adding roughly 9,000 to 10,000 troops expected to arrive by late November.

The third carrier is the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which departed San Diego on September 27, according to Dow Jones reporting. The USS George H.W. Bush and the USS George Washington are already in the region; if the Washington is still deployed when the Roosevelt arrives, it will be the first time since April that three U.S. carrier strike groups operate in the Middle East simultaneously.

On the same day, President Trump said at the White House that Iran would “cease to exist” unless it signs a “very fair agreement,” and told Time magazine in an interview that he could resume bombing Iran after the November 3 midterm elections.
