On Oct 2, President Trump announced the federal government will make one-time $90 payments to more than 20 million Medicare Part B enrollees to help cover premiums, drawn from the never-before-used Medicare Improvement Fund ($2 billion appropriated by Congress).

Why it matters

President Donald J. Trump announced on Oct 2 that the federal government will make one-time payments of $90 per person to more than 20 million Medicare Part B enrollees to help pay their premiums. The money comes from the Medicare Improvement Fund — created by Congress in 2008 with $2 billion, which the White House says has never before been utilized. Payments go out in early October: most as direct deposits, and by mailed check for those without banking details on file.

Full report

According to the White House fact sheet, most Medicare Part B enrollees qualify. Those whose premiums are already paid by Medicaid, or who pay an Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA), do not. The White House calls Trump the first president to ever use the fund to directly lower costs for senior citizens.

The administration also noted the Sept 10 "Working Families Obamacare Refund," sending $500 each to nearly 1 million Americans overcharged for Obamacare coverage, and urged Congress to pass the "Great Healthcare Plan" to further cut drug prices and premiums. Seniors can call 1-800-MEDICARE to check eligibility, or the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 for payment status.
