Trump says AI data centers should pay a "dividend" to host communities

Trump said Wednesday that data center companies should pay a "dividend" to the communities where they are sited; he also wants large data centers to generate their own power and feed excess electricity back to the local community or grid.

Why it matters

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday (Oct 21) that companies building data centers should pay a "dividend" to the communities where they are sited if they want to make the developments popular. Writing on Truth Social, he said he had watched the process closely: "data centers that were highly unpopular in a certain area, have become extremely popular when a financial deal is struck." It puts community revenue-sharing from data centers on the federal political agenda for the first time.

Trump wrote that new and large, in some cases "gigantic", data centers are "mandated" by him to "make their own electricity, and give or sell any excess back to the local community, or grid." In February he had already said major technology companies must build their own power plants for their data centers to protect consumers from rising bills.

Reuters notes that the vast quantities of water and power consumed by data centers fueling the AI boom have turned them into a political flashpoint in communities across the country, with opposition uniting voters across ideological lines. Even as the administration prioritizes rapid AI development to compete with China, it cannot ignore the shift in voter sentiment.

Over the same week, AI giant Anthropic announced it would commit 5% of its shares to a new fund for the "public good", while Elon Musk pledged on Monday to give one SpaceX share to "every kid in America", arguing for direct distribution of the AI boom's spoils as the sector faces public scrutiny.
