Trump declares immediate "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine; Zelenskyy says he was not informed

Trump announced on Truth Social that both sides agreed to halt strikes on energy infrastructure, but neither Kyiv nor Moscow confirmed; Zelenskyy said Ukraine would accept if Russia does.

Why it matters

This is the first energy-specific ceasefire arrangement in the war announced unilaterally by a US president. If real, it would directly affect strikes on energy infrastructure ahead of winter — but Ukraine says it was not informed, raising doubts about the deal's reality and enforceability.

Full report

US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday, October 11, on his Truth Social platform: "Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!" The White House account reposted the message on X about 20 minutes later. Trump gave no details on when the truce was agreed, which facilities it covers, how long it lasts, or how it would be monitored.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Axios shortly after that he had not been informed: "The ceasefire announcement was news for me. But if Russians agree to an energy ceasefire, Ukraine will agree. If President Trump negotiated it with Putin — please tell us when the ceasefire begins — we are ready and we will accept it." A senior Ukrainian official told the Kyiv Independent that Kyiv had no information about the arrangement and doubted Russia had been informed.

As of publication, neither the Kremlin nor the Ukrainian government had issued a formal statement, and Reuters reported there was "no immediate confirmation" from either side. The announcement follows Trump's criticism a day earlier blaming Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries for rising US diesel prices and suggesting Ukraine find "a new leader"; Zelenskyy had said earlier Sunday that Ukraine would reciprocally halt strikes on Russian oil facilities if Russia stopped hitting Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
