Trump says he 'may' meet Kim Jong-un during November Asia trip

Trump said on October 12 he may meet North Korea's Kim Jong-un while attending the ASEAN summit in Manila and the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November — potentially their first meeting in about seven years.

Why it matters

US President Donald Trump said on October 12 that he may meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during his trip to Asia next month: "I may. That'll be exciting, won't it? But I get along with him." It would be their first meeting since June 2019 at Panmunjom, about seven years ago.

Trump is expected to attend the ASEAN summit in Manila, Philippines, on November 16, then travel to Shenzhen, China, for the APEC summit from November 17 to 19, where he is also expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Background

Trump met Kim three times during his first term — in Singapore in June 2018, Hanoi in February 2019, and at the Demilitarized Zone in Panmunjom in June 2019 — without reaching a denuclearization deal. Talks have stalled since, and North Korea has continued expanding its nuclear and missile programs.

The Wall Street Journal reported in August that Trump had pressed aides to arrange a meeting with Kim as early as this fall, with the Shenzhen APEC summit floated as a possible venue. Neither Washington nor Pyongyang has formally announced any meeting.

Notably, North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles toward the East Sea on October 12, underscoring continued tensions on the peninsula.
