Trump Slams Nobel Peace Prize for Pillay, Says He Deserved '8, Not Just 1'
Trump posted a lengthy Truth Social statement Oct 9 attacking the Nobel Committee's award to South African jurist Navi Pillay; Israel condemned the decision and the U.S. announced new ICC sanctions.
Why it matters
Trump claimed he settled eight wars and deserved "8 Nobel Peace Prizes, not just 1," calling the award to Pillay "an indelible stain on Norway." The Oct 9 award has triggered a new political fight and fresh U.S. sanctions against the International Criminal Court.

In the Oct 9 Truth Social post, Trump wrote: "I know nothing about this woman, and neither does anyone else! … no one ever heard of her other than the fact that she, very obviously, hates Israel." He listed eight conflicts he claims to have ended: Cambodia–Thailand, Kosovo–Serbia, DRC–Rwanda, Pakistan–India, Israel–Iran, Egypt–Ethiopia, Armenia–Azerbaijan, and Israel–Hamas.
Israel's Foreign Ministry condemned the Nobel decision, accusing Pillay of a politically motivated campaign against Israel. Pillay chaired a 2021–2025 UN inquiry that concluded Israel committed genocide in Gaza — a finding Israel rejects.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new sanctions against the International Criminal Court the same day. Pillay served as an ICC judge from 2003 to 2008 and as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.
Pillay fired back via SABC News on Oct 9: "the fact that he never got the Nobel Prize and never will is an indictment against him."
