Trump to visit Philippines for ASEAN summit, then Shenzhen for APEC and meeting with Xi

White House confirms: Trump travels to Manila on Nov. 16 for the ASEAN summit, then to Shenzhen for the Nov. 17-19 APEC summit and a face-to-face with Xi Jinping.
Why it matters
This is the first official confirmation from the White House of Trump's Asia itinerary this year: placing the Manila ASEAN summit ahead of the Shenzhen APEC summit is being read as a signal to Southeast Asian allies that the region has not been forgotten. It is also his first visit to the Philippines since 2017, and the face-to-face meeting with Xi Jinping in Shenzhen will be their third this year, putting the direction of US-China ties back in the spotlight.
Full report
White House officials confirmed to the New York Post on October 11 that US President Donald Trump will travel to Manila on November 16 for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, before heading to Shenzhen, China, for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit on November 17-19.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has long invited Trump to visit. Trump's last official trip to the Philippines was in 2017, also for the ASEAN summit; last year he attended the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and APEC in Gyeongju, South Korea. A White House official said the goal of this year's trip is to demonstrate America's commitment to its Southeast Asian allies and advance US economic and national security objectives.
Trump will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in person in Shenzhen — their third face-to-face meeting this year, following the May summit in Beijing and the September summit at the White House; the two are also slated to meet again at the Group of 20 summit in Miami in December. The September White House summit was Xi's first White House visit since 2015; the two sides announced diplomatic initiatives including a US-China artificial intelligence alert system, and Xi invited 100,000 young Americans to China for an education exchange.
The South China Morning Post reported on October 2 that the White House was discussing a Manila trip from November 16 to 18, including a bilateral meeting with Marcos Jr. the day after the summit. People familiar with the matter said placing the Manila visit ahead of Shenzhen was meant to frame the Asia tour as broader regional engagement rather than a trip focused solely on China. Xi is not expected to attend the ASEAN summit.
