Trump Signs Executive Order Renaming “Artificial Intelligence” to “Super Intelligence” Across Federal Government

On Sept. 29, 2026, President Donald J. Trump signed the executive order “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence,” directing all federal departments and agencies to use the terms “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official correspondence, public communications, policy documents and non-statutory documents within the executive branch, and to no longer acknowledge the terms “Artificial Intelligence” or “AI.”
The order also directs the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology to propose a federal definition of “Super Intelligence” and “SI” that reflects the current frontier of the technology, and to identify any additional executive action needed to implement it.
The White House fact sheet says the United States is the world leader in Super Intelligence and that the new name better conveys what the technology can do: unlocking new forms of human creativity and empowering Americans to achieve what was previously impossible, rather than “simply imitating or automating human intelligence,” as the old term implies.
The fact sheet also recaps prior Trump administration moves in the field: more than $5 billion announced for the Genesis Mission, a national effort to harness Super Intelligence for breakthroughs in science, medicine, energy and manufacturing; the July 2025 “America’s AI Action Plan” with more than 90 federal actions; and the March 2026 National Super Intelligence Policy Framework with legislative recommendations.
