Why it matters

The White House said Thursday that the Trump administration's campaign against transnational crime has netted 1,296 arrests of members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua between Jan 20, 2025 and Oct 8, 2026 — describing it as the largest federal anti-transnational-crime operation in US history.

Operation details

According to task-force data released publicly for the first time (cited by the White House from a Washington Examiner exclusive), law enforcement arrested 1,296 gang members in that period, and nearly 350 members and associates have been charged with federal crimes. The campaign is run by Homeland Security Task Forces stood up in 2025 to identify, arrest and remove criminal networks and terrorist organizations embedded in US communities.

Background

The Washington Examiner reported that gang members entered the United States through the US-Mexico border during the Biden administration. The White House statement calls the gang a "bloodthirsty" criminal organization and says violent crime rates nationwide have dropped sharply since 2025.
