Trump urges Ukraine to "get a new leader" who can make a deal

Trump told reporters outside the White House on Saturday that Ukraine should replace Zelensky with "a new leader who can make a deal," and warned Kyiv to stop striking Russian refineries. The trigger was his diesel deal with Putin, which Zelensky denounced.

Why it matters

This is Trump's harshest public criticism of Zelensky yet, touching directly on Ukraine's wartime leadership. The open rift over the Russian diesel deal adds fresh uncertainty to US support for Ukraine.

Full report

US President Donald Trump told reporters outside the White House on Saturday, Oct 10: "I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal, because he could have made many deals and for some reason he never does." He added: "I think it's time for Ukraine to get a new president."

The trigger was Friday's Trump-Putin phone call announcing a diesel supply arrangement: Russia would ship diesel to the US and global markets, with the US Treasury issuing a temporary license bypassing sanctions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced it as "a weak decision," calling Russia's move "an investment in the war." Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha responded that only the Ukrainian people decide their political leadership.

Trump also warned Zelensky to stop striking Russian refineries, saying the attacks were driving up global diesel prices and hurting American farmers. Zelensky linked a Russian air strike on Zaporizhzhia the same day, which caused civilian casualties, to the diesel deal, accusing it of emboldening Moscow.
