Uber announced on October 22 that it is rolling out OpenAI's ChatGPT Work to more than 30,000 employees worldwide, up from a 1,000-person pilot, connecting Google Drive, Gmail, Calendar and Slack for multi-step work.

Uber announced on October 22 that it is rolling out OpenAI's ChatGPT Work agent to more than 30,000 employees worldwide. The company describes it as its first company-wide deployment of an agentic platform tailored for knowledge work, expanded from an earlier pilot of 1,000 employees.

From pilot to company-wide

According to OpenAI's announcement, the pilot covered teams in finance, operations and product. The wider rollout reaches operations, finance, marketing and product teams, supported by Uber's internal AI skills library, approved integrations and dedicated employee training.

What it does

ChatGPT Work is an agent inside ChatGPT Enterprise designed to take on complex, multi-step tasks and deliver finished work rather than just chat replies. It connects to Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar and Slack, so staff can research information, prepare meeting briefs, build presentations, analyze data and run workflows across applications.

Uber chief technology officer Praveen Neppalli Naga said that as AI transforms how people work, the company wants to give everyone tools to innovate and help shape Uber's future. OpenAI president Greg Brockman said Uber teams can now tap the company's portfolio of frontier models and agents for more complex work.

What the pilot showed

TechCrunch reported that roughly 80% of the original pilot users were non-engineers. They used the agent to analyze operational data, spot business trends, localize training materials across markets and languages, and build personal interactive dashboards. Engineering teams continue to use OpenAI's Codex for software development. The announcement did not disclose the contract's financial terms.

For enterprise buyers, the deployment is a sign of the times: AI tools are moving from small developer pilots to company-wide enterprise licensing, becoming part of daily back-office work. Uber says it will watch the workflows employees invent during the rollout before deciding on further AI investment.
