White House to block CNN from Thursday pool coverage despite judge's order

The White House plans to keep CNN from its scheduled Thursday TV pool duty and will bring no pool camera on the president's Texas and Oklahoma trip, The Hill reported Sept. 30 — days after a federal judge ordered the outlets' access restored.

Why it matters

The White House is defying a court order in a targeted new way: not a blanket ban this time, but blocking CNN's scheduled Thursday pool duty and scrapping the pool camera for the president's Texas-Oklahoma trip. The five networks demand written assurances of equal treatment for CNN, and full pool coverage remains on hold as the press-versus-White House standoff escalates.

Full report

The White House plans to keep CNN journalists from carrying out the network's previously scheduled duty providing television pool coverage of President Trump on Thursday (Oct. 1), a source familiar with the situation confirmed to The Hill on Sept. 30. CNN was not listed as the TV pool outlet in guidance the West Wing distributed to media outlets Wednesday evening, and no pool camera will travel with the president during his scheduled trip to Texas and Oklahoma. The White House did not immediately respond to The Hill's request for comment.

The move revives a showdown that began two weeks ago, when Trump banned reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House over what he called their publishing of "fake news," which he argued endangered national security. The three outlets sued, and U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly ordered the White House to "immediately return, reinstate, and restore" their access under a 14-day temporary restraining order, finding their press passes were revoked without due process.

Kelly's ruling did not specifically address the television pool arrangement. According to NPR, the five major networks have asked the White House for written assurance that CNN — one of the outlets Trump tried to ban — will receive equal access and treatment without government interference; otherwise full pool coverage stays suspended. CNN and MS NOW journalists were still being turned away from recent White House events, and both sides are expected back in court.
