White House Blocks Politico From Air Force One Nebraska Trip as Press-Access Fight Escalates

· N GLOBE

The White House refused to let Politico fly on Air Force One on Monday, preventing it from serving its print pool duty; a Politico spokesperson confirmed the exclusion. A court hearing on a preliminary injunction is set for Thursday.

Why it matters

The White House on Monday refused to allow Politico aboard Air Force One for President Trump's trip to Nebraska, leaving the outlet unable to perform its scheduled print pool duty in the rotating travel press pool. A Politico spokesperson confirmed the exclusion. Politico is the second outlet barred on its pool day after CNN was repeatedly kept off the plane, widening the access dispute between the White House and the three outlets.

Background

On September 18, President Trump announced a ban on Politico, CNN and MS NOW entering the White House. The outlets sued on September 21, alleging violations of the First and Fifth Amendments. U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly issued a temporary restraining order requiring the administration to restore the outlets' press credentials and White House access; the order expires October 8.

The White House has argued that access to the White House complex is different from access to tight spaces like Air Force One. CNN had previously been barred from the plane on days it was scheduled to serve as the TV pool representative.

What's next

Judge Kelly is scheduled to hold a hearing on Thursday (October 8) on the outlets' request for a preliminary injunction extending protection. Monday's exclusion of Politico is expected to be incorporated into the next legal filing.
