Vancouver Canucks Fall 3–2 to Islanders, Losing Streak Hits Five

· N GLOBE

The New York Islanders beat the Vancouver Canucks 3–2 at UBS Arena on October 13: Kyle Palmieri scored twice including the third-period winner, Matias Maccelli had a goal and an assist; Brock Boeser and Max Sasson scored for Vancouver, which has lost five straight since opening the season 2–1.

Why it matters

Vancouver opened the season 2–1 and looked promising, but five straight losses have followed, with the same story lines repeating: costly turnovers and squandered power-play chances. The Canucks play at Florida on Thursday and badly need to stop the slide.

The game

At UBS Arena in Elmont on the night of October 13, the New York Islanders beat the visiting Vancouver Canucks 3–2. Kyle Palmieri opened the scoring in the first period, and Matias Maccelli doubled the lead just 53 seconds later. Max Sasson and Brock Boeser — whose power-play tally was the 80th of his career with the man advantage, fifth most in franchise history — tied it at 2–2 in the second; Palmieri's second goal of the night at 5:38 of the third sealed the win.

By the numbers

Palmieri scored twice (his first two goals of the season), Maccelli added a goal and an assist (his first as an Islander), Matthew Schaefer picked up two assists, and Ilya Sorokin made 23 saves. For Vancouver, Leevi Merilainen was strong in net with 35 saves, while Brock Boeser and Max Sasson scored the two goals. The Canucks fall to 2–6–0, losers of five straight.
