Vancouver Council Shake-Up: Left-Wing Trio Takes Supermajority, Only 3 Incumbents Re-Elected

Preliminary Vancouver election results: COPE takes 4 seats, Greens 4, OneCity 1; with Green mayor Pete Fry, the left holds 10 of 11 council seats. ABC keeps just one.
Why it matters
The centre-right ABC party, which swept to a supermajority four years ago, was nearly wiped out in this Vancouver civic election. With a left-wing supermajority on council plus clean sweeps of the park and school boards, Vancouver's housing, public safety and fiscal policy direction is set for a sharp turn over the next four years.
Full report
According to the City of Vancouver's preliminary count (148 of 149 voting places reporting as of 12:30 a.m. Sunday), the Oct 17 election gave COPE 4 of the 10 council seats, the Greens 4, OneCity 1, and ABC just one — Mike Klassen.
COPE's Sean Orr won the most votes of any council candidate with 75,305, followed by Green candidate Annette Reilly with 71,794. Only three incumbents were re-elected (Orr, OneCity's Lucy Maloney and ABC's Klassen); the other seven are newcomers. Including Green mayor Pete Fry (elected with 98,494 votes), the left bloc holds 10 of the 11 council seats.
The left also swept all 7 park board seats (Green/COPE) and all 9 school board seats (COPE/Green/OneCity). ABC won 7 council seats in 2022; this time it kept only one.
Official results, including the public safety referendum, will be published Wednesday, Oct 21; the new council is sworn in Nov 2.
