Vancouver votes Oct 24: Eby promises new millionaire tax bracket to fund B.C. health care

B.C. NDP Leader David Eby promised at a campaign stop in Comox on Oct 3 that, if re-elected in the Oct 24 provincial election, he would create a new tax bracket for people earning C$1 million or more a year, with the revenue dedicated to health care.
Why it matters
British Columbia's provincial election is on October 24 — 19 days away — and health care is one of the campaign's central issues. Eby's millionaire-tax pledge is his flagship plan to fund it, and it goes directly to how Vancouver and B.C. voters will decide.
Full report
Eby announced the plan Sunday at a campaign event in Comox on Vancouver Island. The NDP would add a new top tax bracket for individuals earning C$1 million or more a year, with the proceeds earmarked for health-care services. Reports say British Columbians earning more than C$190,405 a year would also pay more income tax.
The same platform includes price controls on some groceries, gasoline and diesel; a temporary 10-cent-per-litre cut to the provincial motor fuel tax; a new tax on empty condominiums; and doubling the speculation and vacancy tax for domestic owners from 1% to 2%, with a 5% rate for foreign owners.
Eby said it is fair to ask the highest earners to contribute more while public services are under strain. The B.C. Conservatives countered that the NDP's answer to every problem is another tax.
