Vancouver Fairmont Hotel Workers to Vote on Strike Mandate Today and Tomorrow

Unifor said Oct. 5 that 445 rooms and food-and-beverage workers at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, represented by Local 114, will vote Oct. 6–7 on authorizing strike action after the union declared itself deeply dissatisfied with the employer's stance on wages and benefits.
Why it matters
A strike at one of Vancouver's most recognizable hotels could disrupt downtown hospitality and put 445 service workers on the picket line. The outcome of this week's vote will determine whether bargaining escalates.
Full report
Unifor, Canada's largest private-sector union, announced on Oct. 5 that workers in the rooms and food-and-beverage departments at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver will vote on Oct. 6–7 on whether to authorize strike action.
The union says 445 workers at the hotel are represented by Unifor Local 114, and that the bargaining committee is "deeply dissatisfied" with the employer's position on wages, benefits, vacations and travel benefits for banquet staff. If the vote passes, the committee would gain authorization to escalate job action.
