Vancouver: union report says city fast-tracking hotels while affordable housing lags

· N GLOBE

Hotel workers' union UNITE HERE Local 40 says Vancouver approved 16.2% more hotel rooms than affordable homes since 2025, questioning the FIFA hotel-shortage rationale.

Why it matters

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching and the city's hotel-shortage argument under debate, the report puts Vancouver council's hotel-first approvals under scrutiny — framing it as a direct trade-off with the affordable-housing crisis.

UNITE HERE Local 40, the hotel workers' union, released a report today, October 1, 2026 — "Vancouver's Hotel Room 'Crisis': A Developers' Bonanza, Not an Affordability Solution" — accusing Vancouver City Hall of fast-tracking hotel development while affordable housing falls behind.

According to the union's analysis, Vancouver council approved 1,011 hotel rooms versus 719 social and co-op homes in 2025, and 1,972 hotel rooms versus 1,848 social, non-market and co-op homes so far in 2026 — a combined 16.2% more hotel rooms than affordable units. The report also says the city has about 7,000 hotel rooms in the pipeline toward a 10,000-room target for 2050.

The report argues the FIFA World Cup hotel-shortage rationale is weakening, citing June hotel bookings down 20% and 57.4% average occupancy across the seven match days, and flags hotel proposals at 75 East 8th Ave and 148 East 6th Ave that the union says could displace existing renters. Citing its own polling, the union says voters favor affordable housing over hotels 3-to-1. The report was launched alongside the union's "Affordable Housing Now!" campaign.

The figures cited are the union's own analysis; City Hall has not responded to the report at the time of publication.
