Vancouver's Kids Vote opens today: children cast their own ballots at libraries

The City of Vancouver, Vancouver Public Library and CIVIX launch Kids Vote today (Oct. 3) through Oct. 17 at VPL branches, letting preschool to Grade 3 children vote and share their views.
Why it matters
With Vancouver's civic election underway, the city wants its youngest residents in on democracy. Kids Vote gives children from preschool to Grade 3 a hands-on way to cast a ballot and share opinions, building civic participation early; preliminary results will be shared Oct. 17, before the official results.
Full report
According to the City of Vancouver's Sept. 24 announcement, Kids Vote is run with the Vancouver Public Library (VPL) and CIVIX. This year marks the first time since the program debuted in 2018 that it spans the full voting period — Oct. 3 to 17. Parents can bring children to any VPL branch except Carnegie to vote.
The kids' ballot asks four questions: where they like to go for fun in Vancouver, which quality they want in a leader, what they wish they had more time for, and what matters most to them in the city. VPL has also created a Kids Vote reading list of books about voting and democracy.
Older students can take part in CIVIX's Student Vote program. The initiative runs alongside the civic election, whose voting period ends Oct. 17.
