900 Vancouver school support workers vote 96.9% to authorize strike

The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 963 says about 900 Vancouver School Board support staff voted 96.9% to authorize a strike. The union could serve 72-hour strike notice at any time; the dispute centres on working conditions and job security, not wages.
Why it matters
If the strike goes ahead, school maintenance, meal programs, cleaning and student supervision across Vancouver's public schools would be affected. The union says its members have "rarely" gone on strike at Vancouver schools, underscoring how serious the bargaining impasse has become.
Full report
The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 963 announced October 5 that about 900 Vancouver School Board support staff voted 96.9 per cent in favour of strike action. Union business manager Tim De Vivo said the union could serve 72-hour strike notice at any time, while urging the school board to return to the bargaining table.
The members include building engineers, custodians, chefs and bakers, culinary assistants, food service workers and supervision aides. The union says the dispute is not about wages, but about the employer demanding concessions on working conditions, job security and protection of trade qualifications. Bargaining has been ongoing since October 2025, and talks stalled last month when the board declined to discuss the union's counter-offer.
The Vancouver School Board says it has contingency plans in place to support school and district operations in the event of any job action.
