Vancouver SkyTrain begins five months of overnight testing Oct 3

TransLink will run trains after hours on the Expo and Millennium lines to commission its new Operations Control Centre, calling it the largest technological upgrade in its history.

Why it matters

The testing is the key step before TransLink opens its new 40,000-square-foot Operations Control Centre in 2027 — its first control-space expansion since 1985 — which must be ready to run the Broadway Subway and Surrey–Langley extensions.

Full story

TransLink will conduct overnight testing on sections of the Expo and Millennium lines starting Saturday, October 3, 2026, continuing for five months. Testing happens outside service hours: Saturdays from 1:45 to 5:45 a.m., Sundays from 1:45 to 6:45 a.m., and Mondays from 12:45 to 4:45 a.m. The agency says no service disruptions are expected.

During testing, the new control centre will gradually take over train operations, testing daily service, maintenance and emergency response. TransLink calls the project the "largest technological upgrade in its history." The centre will support the Broadway Subway Extension, due in 2027, and the Dave Barrett (Surrey–Langley) Extension, due in 2029.

Residents near the lines may hear trains running overnight. TransLink says testing will rotate between locations to spread the noise, and alarms and announcements will be suspended where possible.
