Full report

The Vancouver Police Department said October 8 that an 87-year-old man was targeted yesterday afternoon near Renfrew Street and East 1st Avenue in East Vancouver. He was approached by a man and a woman in a white sedan. The woman, seated in the passenger seat, shook the victim's hand, placed fake jewelry on his wrist and removed his ring. He realized the ring was missing shortly after, went home and called police.

Police describe both suspects as Middle Eastern or South Asian; the woman spoke without an accent and the driver was a short man.

VPD urges seniors to be cautious of strangers who stand unusually close or seek physical contact, to politely step back if someone invades their personal space, and never to let strangers handle their belongings. Anyone who believes they have been targeted should call 911 immediately.
