Insp. Stephanie Willoughby, who leads the initiative, said the campaign was timed with the start of the school year to combine education with enforcement: "E-scooters are a great mode of transportation, but we want people to know the rules and get to their destination safely." She revealed that over the summer Vancouver saw at least one person seriously injured and one fatality, which prompted the project.
Key e-scooter rules in Vancouver: helmets must be worn; e-scooters must be walked on sidewalks and across crosswalks; no doubling; riders must be at least 16; front and rear lights on between sunset and sunrise; ride in cycle lanes or on the far right of roads (banned on roads with limits above 50 km/h); maximum speed 25 km/h. The VPD Traffic Enforcement Unit will continue similar safety initiatives through the year.
