U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced a federal operation dismantled an illegal gun "pipeline" from North Carolina to Washington D.C.; five arrested, 13-count indictment, including D.C. special police officers.

Why it matters

This is one of the largest federal gun-trafficking takedowns in the District in recent times — and the arrests include special police officers themselves, underscoring how illegal guns flow into the nation's capital.

Announced at press conference

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro held a press conference with federal law enforcement officials on Wednesday (October 21), announcing the dismantling of an illegal firearms trafficking network running from North Carolina to Washington D.C. Pirro described it as a "conveyor belt of weapons," with guns bought under false pretenses by straw purchasers and moved into the District and surrounding areas.

Five arrested, 13-count indictment

Five people were arrested, including D.C. special police officers. A grand jury returned a 13-count indictment. The network is reportedly linked to drugs, robberies and even a homicide. Agencies involved include the ATF, the U.S. Marshals Service and the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force.
