Washington D.C. jail sued in class action over food allegedly served with mice and insects

· N GLOBE

Six inmates filed a federal class-action suit on Oct 15 alleging the D.C. jail has for years served food containing mice and insects, seeking damages and immediate fixes.

Why it matters

This is one of the most serious food-sanitation allegations against the D.C. jail in recent years. If proven, it affects the health rights of many inmates and puts the District's jail management under heavy scrutiny.

Full report

Six inmates filed a class-action lawsuit on Oct 15 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, alleging the D.C. jail has for years served meals containing mice, roaches and other insects. The suit seeks class-action status, damages, and immediate fixes such as intensive inspections, airtight food storage and regular exterminator treatments.

The complaint cites multiple incidents: plaintiff Kevin Condray says he bit into a dead baby mouse in rice and beans in 2023; plaintiff Mustafa Wright says he found a cockroach in his potatoes and, on Thanksgiving 2025, an insect in his cranberry sauce — with a photo included in the suit. The plaintiffs say the tainted food exposed inmates to diseases including salmonella, hantavirus and leptospirosis.

The Department of Corrections says it is committed to "continuous improvement and accountability in its food service program." The case is now before a federal court, which has not yet ruled on class-action status.
