Washington Council Backs $300M Stadium-Armory Metro Upgrade Ahead of 2030 RFK Stadium Opening

The D.C. Council on October 6 approved a transit package tied to the new RFK stadium opening in 2030: up to $300 million to modernize the Stadium-Armory Metro station and $5 million for the first phase of a new Gold Line bus route.
Why it matters
The funding locks in the transit backbone for Washington's new RFK stadium, expected to open in 2030. The Stadium-Armory station is the primary rail gateway to the stadium district, and the upgrades are meant to handle game-day crowds for decades.
Full report
The D.C. Council on October 6 passed three emergency bills backing the transportation package tied to the new RFK stadium: up to $300 million for modernizing the Stadium-Armory Metro station through a multi-year reimbursement agreement with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), plus $5 million for the first phase of a new Gold Line bus route.
A third bill preserves the District's overall funding commitment to Metro. WMATA's board had already approved the reimbursement agreements for the station and bus upgrades on July 30.
Background
The new RFK stadium is planned to open in 2030 on the site of the old Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. The transit package is part of the District's broader stadium-district development, which pairs the venue with surrounding infrastructure upgrades.
