Kennedy Center Honors Move to Washington's Capital One Arena

The Dec. 7 ceremony moves to Capital One Arena after the board voted to close the venue over safety and financial woes; the first relocation since 1978.
Why it matters
The Honors are Washington's signature celebration of the performing arts. Moving them out of the Kennedy Center for the first time in nearly five decades underscores just how deep the venue's structural and financial crisis has become — and how the fight over the building's future, including its name, is reshaping the institution.
Full report
The 49th Kennedy Center Honors will be held on December 7 at Capital One Arena in downtown Washington, a Kennedy Center spokesperson confirmed Friday, October 2. It will be the first time since the awards were established in 1978 that the ceremony is not held at the Kennedy Center itself.
The move follows a September vote by the Kennedy Center board to close the Potomac-side venue over structural safety concerns and severe financial pressure. Repairs are estimated at about $257 million, and the building could be shuttered for roughly two years, according to local reports.
The closure has unfolded alongside a battle over the building's name: President Trump has sought to add his name to the venue, but a federal judge has twice ruled that the name cannot be changed without Congress, and in May Judge Christopher Cooper ordered "Trump" signage removed. Congress designated the center as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy in 1964, and federal law bars the board from rededicating it or adding another person's name to its facade.
Last year's Honors were hosted by Trump, with Sylvester Stallone and George Strait among the honorees. Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the operator of Capital One Arena, confirmed it will host this year's ceremony.
