The 51st Marine Corps Marathon takes place October 25 in the Washington region, starting at 7:20 a.m.; downtown D.C. streets plus Key Bridge and Memorial Bridge close about 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with Metrorail opening at 5 a.m.

Why it matters

The 51st Marine Corps Marathon runs through the Washington region today, bringing tens of thousands of runners and spectators to Arlington and downtown D.C. — and closing major downtown streets and two river bridges from morning into the afternoon. Drivers heading into the city should reroute.

Full report

The race takes place on Sunday, October 25: wheelchair and handcycle divisions start at 7:05 a.m., duos at 7:07 a.m. and the marathon at 7:20 a.m., from Route 110 in Arlington near the Pentagon. The course runs through Rosslyn, crosses Key Bridge into Georgetown, passes the National Mall, returns to Virginia over the 14th Street Bridge, winds through Crystal City and finishes uphill at the Marine Corps War Memorial.

The Metropolitan Police Department's traffic advisory lists D.C. street closures from about 5:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.: 3rd, 7th and 14th Streets between Constitution and Independence Avenues, plus M Street, Canal Road, Wisconsin Avenue, K Street, Madison and Jefferson Drives, Independence Avenue, Rock Creek Parkway, 14th Street to the bridge, the 14th Street Bridge HOV lanes, Key Bridge and Memorial Bridge. Many of those streets are posted Emergency No Parking from 2:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Arlington closures begin around 3:00 a.m., some lasting into the evening.

Metrorail opened at 5:00 a.m. for runners and spectators. Known as "The People's Marathon," the event offers no prize money, and its USA Track and Field-certified course means finish times count toward Boston Marathon entry.
