Full report

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser filed legislation authorizing up to $410 million in bonds for renovations at Nationals Park, the home of the Washington Nationals. The bonds are expected to generate about $380 million in net proceeds for the project.

The proposed upgrades would address aging infrastructure and modernize fan spaces, concession areas, player facilities and suites at the ballpark, which opened in 2008 following the District's 2006 investment that helped transform the Navy Yard neighborhood.

The legislation is part of the mayor's "Nationals Park Preservation and Improvement" initiative, tied to the Nationals' lease extension through 2059. It follows an ongoing city debate over public funding for professional sports venues; Bowser has separately opposed a $300 million city contribution to renovations of Audi Field, the District's soccer stadium.
