Washington's 250-Foot Triumphal Arch Could Break Ground November 5, Justice Dept Filing Says

In a Wednesday-evening court filing, the Justice Department said the National Capital Planning Commission meets November 5 and could approve final arch plans that day — 'construction could commence as early as November 5, 2026'; opponents asked a judge Thursday for a preliminary injunction.
Why it matters
The Trump administration told a federal judge Wednesday evening that construction on the controversial 250-foot triumphal arch could begin in just two weeks — as early as November 5, days after the midterm elections. Veterans and preservationists fighting the project asked a judge Thursday for a preliminary injunction to stop it.

The Justice Department said in the filing that the National Capital Planning Commission is set to meet on November 5 and could sign off on final plans that day; with final authorization from the Department of the Interior, 'construction could commence as early as November 5, 2026,' including demolition in preparation for construction. Final plans released last week describe the project as a 'ceremonial gateway' to the capital — omitting the drone storage, sniper posts and ammunition cache President Trump described in September, though the Interior Department says the design could still 'accommodate the national security functions.'
The arch would sit at Memorial Circle, between Memorial Bridge and Arlington National Cemetery, where nearly 430,000 service members, veterans and family members are buried. 'Congress has not authorized the arch. Unless and until it does so, construction of this project is unlawful, regardless of what the NCPC decides on November 5,' said Wendy Liu, an attorney for the challengers. Charles Birnbaum of the Cultural Landscape Foundation accused the administration of fast-tracking the project despite some 100,000 negative public comments.
