Washington Breaks Ground Monday on $19 Million Upshur Recreation Center Modernization

Mayor Muriel Bowser will break ground Monday at 11 a.m. on the $19 million modernization of Upshur Recreation Center in Ward 4, expanding it from nearly 6,500 to nearly 9,500 square feet.
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser will join the Department of General Services, the Department of Parks and Recreation and community members at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 2, to break ground on the $19 million modernization of Upshur Recreation Center, at 4300 Arkansas Ave NW in Ward 4.
Nearly 50 percent larger, with facilities rebuilt
The project will expand the existing recreation facility from nearly 6,500 square feet to nearly 9,500 square feet, adding an expanded pool house, a renovated pool and splash pad, a new indoor half gym and fitness center, a multi-purpose room, a technology area and a new outdoor basketball court. Outdoor spaces for active play and community gatherings, as well as accessibility from street level and walking paths, will also be improved.
Part of a citywide recreation investment
Since 2015, the Bowser Administration has invested more than $640 million in recreation centers citywide, including approximately $44 million in Ward 4, with an additional $27 million planned for current and future Ward 4 projects, according to the Mayor's Office. The groundbreaking will be streamed live on the Mayor's Office website.
