The Arakan Army, which controls the area, and local rescue official Wai Hun Aung confirmed the details to the Associated Press. The strike happened at noon local time (0530 GMT); the dead included vendors, shoppers and pedestrians. Photos and videos posted on social media showed buildings on fire, damaged vehicles and parts of a nearby bridge destroyed.
Aung said the market was the region's main wholesale centre, drawing traders and shoppers from across the state. "This is one of the most severe airstrikes in Rakhine," he said. Reuters said it could not independently verify the details.
The military did not immediately comment but has previously said it strikes only legitimate military targets. Myanmar has been in civil war since the 2021 coup; the Arakan Army has captured 14 of Rakhine's 17 townships since its November 2023 offensive.
It is the deadliest airstrike in Rakhine since a December 2025 hospital airstrike in the west of the state killed at least 30 people.
