Sri Lankan traveller Avishka Kaumadi's ginger cat Chuuti escaped its carrier in Dubai International Airport's cargo area on Oct 11; found 10 days later inside a baggage carousel tunnel, thinner but safe, and now seeing a vet.

Why it matters

A 10-day airport cat saga has a happy ending. Sri Lankan traveller Avishka Kaumadi's ginger cat Chuuti escaped its carrier in Dubai International Airport's cargo area on the night of Oct. 11 as she prepared to fly home; on Oct. 21, she announced on social media that Chuuti had finally been found.

The 10-day ordeal

That night, Kaumadi had already passed immigration when she was told the cat had escaped. She refused to board, searched the cargo area with airport staff for over an hour without luck, then waited at the airport for about 28 hours before flying home to wait for news. Airport staff kept placing food around to lure him out, while UAE animal rescue communities (including @UAEanimalrescue) shared her appeals. Sri Lankan outlet Aviation Voice reported Chuuti was ultimately found inside a baggage carousel tunnel at the airport.

The reunion

Kaumadi told Gulf News that Chuuti had lost weight and gotten dirty, and was being taken to a vet for a check-up: "When I went up to him and spoke to him, he answered me in his own voice — he recognised me." She thanked SriLankan Airlines, ground handler dnata and Dubai International Airport, and wrote on Facebook: "Chuuti is not just a pet; he is my beloved child, my family and a piece of my heart."
