Sydney Airport security staff strike in two windows today as airlines offer free flight changes

· N GLOBE

Security screening staff at Sydney Airport will stop work in two windows today, Oct. 16 (6–10am and 5–9pm AEDT); both domestic and international departures face longer queues, and Virgin Australia and Qantas are offering fee-free changes on today's bookings.

Why it matters

Both strike windows hit the morning and evening travel peaks. Screening stays open but runs slower — a real missed-flight risk for anyone departing Sydney today, which is why airlines are unusually offering fee-free rebooking at the same time.

Full report

On Friday, October 16, security screening employees at Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport are taking industrial action: staff of contractor Certis will stop work from 6am to 10am and again from 5pm to 9pm AEDT, covering both domestic and international terminals.

The Transport Workers' Union says crisis talks with Certis collapsed on Thursday, with the dispute centred on full-time jobs, rostering and part-time hours. Sydney Airport has issued a passenger advisory urging travellers to allow extra time and watch for airline messages.

Virgin Australia is letting passengers booked to depart Sydney today move to Saturday, October 17, with no change fee or fare difference in the same fare type; Qantas is also offering fee-free changes on eligible bookings made before October 16. Jetstar has warned passengers travelling through terminals T1 and T2 to expect delays.
