Full report
Selling was concentrated in semiconductor and AI infrastructure names. Chipmakers fell for the eighth straight day, their longest losing streak since 2008: AMD, Broadcom and Intel dropped 4% to 6% on Friday, while memory makers Sandisk, Western Digital and Seagate fell about 7%. Software joined the retreat: Twilio fell 10.6%, the biggest drop in the S&P 500 that day; Oracle lost 5% and ServiceNow 4%. Debt fears around AI data-centre builders were a key driver — CoreWeave fell another 11% on Friday, taking its week-to-date loss to 25%, with total debt now at $51 billion. The VIX volatility gauge rose past 22 for the first time since June.
Money rotated into defensive sectors: healthcare, consumer staples and financials attracted buying, with JPMorgan up about 2%. Hotter-than-expected US September inflation, with wholesale prices posting their biggest monthly rise since 2022 and firm energy prices, added to the cautious tone.
